Commissioner for Human Rights
The institution of Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe was established 1999 and acts independently.
The Commissioner’s mandate includes, among other things, assisting member states comply with the Council of Europe’s standards for protection of human rights and pointing out potential weaknesses in the legislation, or its application, which might affect the protection of human rights.
In January 2018, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe elected Dunja Mijatović (Bosnia-Herzegovina) Commissioner for Human Rights, and she took office on 1 April 2018.
In the context of the visits she carries out to member states, she visited Greece in October 2019, meeting with, among other officials, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
