European Convention on Human Rights

Undoubtedly the most significant contribution of the Council of Europe regarding the protection of Human Rights is the European Convention on Human Rights. It was signed in Rome on 4 November 1950 and it was put in force in 1953.

The Convention consolidates a series of human rights that the member States are obliged to guarantee within their territory.

The 70th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights is on 4 November 2020. The Greek Chairmanship shall honour this anniversary in the framework of the 130th Session of the Committe of Ministers scheduled to convene on the very same day in Athens.
